Vincent van Gogh managed to capture the essence of nighttime in color. This is a major achievement, because technically we cannot perceive color in darkness, so a painter has to imagine how the colors that we know are there exist in the lack of light, and translate that onto a surface with pigments that have their own light qualities. His imagining strikes a chord in us. It allows us to see the wildness and secret beauty of night, far above the drama of the town and somewhere in the wind through the cypress tree.
